She had avoided everyone as much as possible lately, because she needed alone time to think. About her new life, mostly. Besides, she wanted to delay the new awkwardness for as long as possible until she figured out what she wanted to say to everybody.
Her mother, for one. She didn't know why it felt like it was going to be hard to talk to her momma now. It just felt different somehow. Maybe it was the fact that Sukalina lost Shaddix, and had nobody? She felt guilty for taking a step away from her kind and lonely mother.
Topaz was another. Midnight knew Topaz had loved Caerwyn. She felt like she had betrayed whatever kind of friendship they had.
And what about Roan? She loved Roan like a brother, but would they grow apart, too? And her friend, Leia. She'd try her best to stay close to everyone in the pack, repair any broken relationships she might have (not that she knew of any yet) and get to know those she hadn't much talked to.
Midnight was taking her new duties very seriously, as always.
She blinked her vibrant yellow eyes, turning her head slightly as she spotted a bull moose way off in the distance. Her perch on the mountains was a high vantage point. She could even see the treetops of the old lands that they had lost to Falling Moon.
Her gut did flipflops when she thought of Xaka. Falling Moon wasn't going to stay silent forever. Caerwyn was sure to exact his revenge of the evil pack sometime, and Midnight would be there to help him. She'd have to kill some wolves with her own jaws. Could she do it?
She thought of the horrible puphood she and Caerwyn, and the rest of the yearlings had. She felt the same twinge of sorrow and resentment boil up in her belly, and remembered the conversation she had with Caerwyn a while back, when her own father had died. Thinking of the pain of her own father's death made her feel stronger sympathy for Caerwyn, and she knew that when the time came, she'd kill any Falling Moon scoundrel that came in their way.
For Caerwyn, for Xaka, for Eagle, and all the other family members who had died at their merciless teeth.
Midnight stood off of her haunches, scanning the ground before her once again. She suddenly felt ready to face everybody, anybody, as a new alpha of Dancing Stars. After all, Dancing Stars was full of the faces she loved and cherished, and she was ready to spend her life dedicated to them.
We all love each other.
She smiled and pulled back her head, legs taught as she stood on the rocks overlooking the territory. She howled for company, anybody who eager for someone to talk to, too. She also lifted her tail proudly, curling it up at the tip out of happiness.
