She was scared; her legs were wobbly and she could barely stand. Her heart was also pounding, and she felt embarassed to even be there at all. But this was something she knew she needed to do, and just thinking about the future she might have gave her the courage to take those last few steps forward. She had always been responsible and detirmined. Midnight cleared her throat and tried to fix her stature, keeping her tail low, but her head high. If Caerwyn saw that she was afraid, it might ruin everything. She had to prove that she could do this. "Hey, Caerwyn? Are you there?" she called out, hearing her voice echo off of the rock. She hoped many things. For one, that he was here, and for another, that she wasn't waking him up. It was nearing midnight, after all. She chose this late time because she knew it'd be private.
She waited quietly, taking deep breaths to stay in control of her emotions. Her yellow eyes reflected off moonlight, and she scanned the surroundings to see if she could see him. She didn't. She sat back on her behind, thinking about what she would say to Caerwyn within the next few minutes. As long as he came. She just wanted to tell him how she felt, and see what he thought of her. If he had deep feelings for her, too, then great! Maybe her dreams would come true after all. And if he didn't, she'd have to learn to accept being just friends with him. That's all. She could do it. Anything for him, right? Right.

Caerwyn was not asleep, and hadn't slept for many nights now. He wouldn't let anyone know it, though. He blinked the sleep from his eyes, the taunt of a good night's rest which he could just not achieve, and shook his fur after standing. Midnight was calling him.
He padded out into the pale moonlight, face a picture of his father's. But Xaka had always had a soft edge to his features, a small smile beneath his stern features, a twinkle in those bright eyes. Caerwyn's features were stony and unfriendly, even upon noticing that Midnight looked very pretty currently.
"Yes, Midnight?" he asked her, untelling of any emotion in his quiet voice.

The no-emotion thing unnerved Midnight, but she pretended it was nothing. Caerwyn was just catching on to his Alpha duties, that was all. She stood staring across at him with her expressive eyes, before she worked up the backbone to say something. "Hello, Caerwyn... I hope I didn't wake you," she said quietly, politely. She wasn't sure if she had, though. He looked like he hadn't been getting sleep tonight. She could just tell. "I just wanted to talk to you. Is that okay?' she asked, flicking her ears forward questioningly.
She realized how stupid she must sound. I just wanted to talk to you? Who ever does that? She frowned without realizing it, awaiting the handsome Caerywn's answer patiently.

His ears flicked backwards and forwards in curiosity, and he padded forward a few more steps before sitting down. What's making her act so strangely? he wondered, but he expression stayed calm and fairly untelling.
"You didn't wake me," he assured her, and nodded to her next sentence. Of course it was okay, otherwise he would've been long gone by now! He grumbled mentally to himself to shut up and stop being grouchy, he liked Midnight and there was no reason to be rude.

Well, here goes. The truth. She sighed frustratingly, her face suddenly hardening. "I can't take it anymore, and that's why I'm here. I don't care if someone says I'm out of my league... They can shove it," she growled quietly, lifting her tail a bit without knowing it. "I don't think I should hide my feelings just because it's the polite thing to do or because you might not feel the same way..." She stared into his eyes, frowning slightly, but her courage was at its peak. She was so ready to say it. She paused for a moment as her mind raced a mile a second, and she let herself recover before continuing. "You inspire me, Caerwyn. Everything I do these days, it doesn't matter what it is, I'm always thinking of you. "'Ohh, I should show this to Caerwyn, I think he'd appreciate seeing this,' or 'I'd love to help Caerwyn out with this!' Even stupid things, like watching the wind blow through the grass or watching the pack as they talk to one another... It'll be twisted to the point that all I picture when I close my eyes is you. You and me." She chuckled, shaking her head at herself. "I love you, Caerwyn. It might already be too late or I may not have had a chance to start with. But my mother is always saying to get things done as soon as you can, because things eventually change. And I think she's right, you know? Everything's about to change this Spring. It's undeniable."
Finally, Midnight had said everything she had meant to say. In fact, she had said more than she had planned, but she had gotten caught up in the moment and she let herself get fired up. But she didn't regret having said any of those things. It was perfect the way it was. She watched Caerwyn's face closely, looking for any sign of a reaction. Meanwhile she had taken a couple of steps backwards, her courage starting to dissapate.

Caerwyn blinked at her silently, watching her, listening, taking in her every word with her yellow eyes fierce and fiery, watching her pour her heart out. There were a million things he wanted to do right now. He wanted it to be easy enough for him to tell her he returned the feelings, he wanted to step forward and lick her cheek, he wanted to turn and run away. But nothing, nothing ever in life, was as easy as you want it to be.
"Midnight," he said gently, the shock in his voice still clear. He'd always had this thing for Midnight, he enjoyed spending time with her, he liked the way she laughed, he appreciated it so much when she tried her very hardest to help the pack, and him. But he didn't know if he truly loved her right now. He didn't know that, that one thing he wanted so badly to understand. H
Realising he had to continue, he took a deep breath, started up and then stopped. He had to get this right. "Midnight, I'm going to tell you the entire truth, something I've been keeping from absolutely everyone, okay?" he took another deep breath, eyes darting from her to the ground and snow beneath their paws. "I... I know that I have feelings for you. Because there's no denying something so plain. But, there is something inside of me, which I can't explain. It's dark, it haunts me when I sleep, it envelops my mind at the worst of times. I don't know what it is, all I know is, it makes me angry and I am not a nice wolf when it happens.
Thankfully, so far, I've managed to keep out of everyone's way when I've had this wierd feeling. I haven't hurt anyone's feelings, except Topaz's, I guess. I feel this intense pressure to get a mate, someone so like you, and start my family this Spring, and keep wolves like Duke away from my family forever. But when this darkness takes over, I don't want anyone to be around.
Midnight, I don't want to hurt you, and I'm afraid that if I take you as a mate and we start a family, I won't be the wolf you currently love sometimes. Sometimes I'll change." Caerwyn stopped, realised he was shaking slightly, and managed to steady himself with some difficulty. He looked down at his legs and then raised his eyes slowly to become level with hers, completely unsure of what she'd say to this deep secret he'd been hiding.

"A... A darkness? I can't say I know what you mean, but..." Her short whiskeres quivered and she retraced the few steps that she had taken backwards. So, Caerwyn did have feelings for her. But he had said something unsettling about himself, and it made Midnight shiver. She thought about Caerwyn, changing. She herself had just said that things change, but she refused to believe that her love for Caerwyn would ever be different. Love was exceptional; it never failed. She was certain of it.
She padded closer to him, slowly but steadily, and rubbed her nose underneath his chin. "Everyone has anger, Caerwyn. Everyone has a side that they keep to themselves. I think, maybe you're stressed out and you've found a way to deal with the problem...? I don't know what to say, Caerwyn, but I do know one thing; I will never take back the words I've said. I'll always be there to help you when you want it. If you can't sleep, I'll lay awake at your side and we'll watch the stars together. If you're having bad dreams, I'll try to soothe them any way I can. I'll always be there to love you or just be your friend... Whatever you decide." Her legs began to shake again as she snuggled her face into his chest, muffling her next words. "I trust my life to you, Caerwyn. We all do. I'm not afraid of any darkness. And if you ever need to talk to me more about it, you know I'd listen."

Caerwyn could feel the heat of spring on it's way, he could see himself and Midnight, pups around them, raising a family, carrying on this epic heritage of his. He understood now why so many wolves were obsessed with mates, because there was this feel of completion. He felt that very feeling, now, with Midnight.
"I love you too, Midnight," Caerwyn replied breathlessly. "I cannot possibly explain this overwhelming feeling to protect and cherish you and that is what I will call love for the rest of my life. Will you be my mate, Midnight? Will you rule over the Dancing Stars with me?"
His words were simple, not particularly extraordinary at all, but they were honest and he knew now that she was a part of him. Her words scribed onto his heart with every breath and her eyes were so full of wonder where his were so full of sadness. If they weren't made for each other, he didn't know who was.

She looked up at him with an unbelieving gaze, at first unsure if her white ears had heard them right. Then she smiled and found herself unable to tear away from his gaze, those peircing yellow eyes that had at one point intimidated her. She knew this was right. She knew it would all work out okay now.
"Yes. I will. I shall," she whispered, feeling completely ecstatic.
For such a long time, for the first year of her life, she wondered what she could contribute to the pack, what kind of place she would have. Now she was proud to see that it was right there by Caerwyn's side, protecting the pack and bringing propserity to her family. She would strive to do her best to live for the pack. For Caerwyn, her new mate. "Thank you, Caerywn, I love you, I love you," she said, her voice raising with pure joy.
